Shaping up for SA Longboard Surfing Champs

This past weekend I completed my second longboarding trials for making Southern Cape team to go to SA Longboard Surfing Championships and I’m glad to report that things went well! It looks like I’ll be seeing all my friends from last year again in Cape St Francis from the 27th of April.

The question is whether to stay in St Francis or near Supers in JBay for the off days when I’m not surfing champs (or for the two days we’re going up early :-). Having gone to JBay for the Billabong for many years I’m inclined to say JBay. It’s just 30-45 mins drive to Seals / St Francis anyway and who can resist a good Supers session or a relaxed Point at 2-3ft for longboard surfing sessions that never end?

Either way, I’m super amped to be part of things again this year and looking for sponsors so drop me a line if you feel generous!

I’m in need of

  • Accommodation (JBay) & Travel Budget  – First priority
    • Accommodation budget for 9 nights in JBay – R 3, 150.00
    • Fuel Budget – R 2, 500.00
  • Performance Hydration
  • Performance Nutrition

  • Eyewear
  • Wetsuits (spring suit for warmer climates and a 4/3 with hoodie etc for cold locations)
  • Performance Waterproof Sunscreen

Rolling Retro 2014

Rolling Retro 2014

Are you ready for a good time? The RVCA Rolling Retro will be held the 9th of Feb 2014 at Llandudno beach. This is a great outing for all on the beach. Various surfers will be riding their own, or old boards supplied by Vudu Surf. Hopefully there will be some contributions going towards Vudu Surf and Dutchie for their factory that burnt down (unconfirmed as of yet – someone set up a donations box!).

If you want to see what it’s like, check out last year’s gallery!

Hot chicks, good surfing and a few beers on a hot Llandudno day, nothing can beat it! Bring your sunblock and brollies and remember to have a granadella lolly for the jolly! Oh yes and there’s usually a few boeries for sale too so bring your mandelas.

Big wave surfing

Thought we do have a big bunch of mad chargers here in Cape Town surfing Sunsets, Dungeons, Bayside, Tand and other ‘bigger’ wave spots I guess you haven’t really cut your teeth if you haven’t surfed Teahupoo.

Here’s a great video about surfing some of the biggest waves on the planet.

Durban Surfer Slade Prestwich Wins Big in Fiji

Fiji – Eighteen year old Slade Prestwich from Durban has just won the Volcom VQS Global Finals held in perfect 4-5 foot surf at Fiji’s infamous Cloudbreak surf spot. The global finals consisted of 9 surfers that had all qualified from 9 various countries including USA, Australia, Brazil, France, Japan, Peru, New Zealand, Puerto Rica and South Africa. The powerful regular-footer used big turns and precision barrel riding to get past runner up Deivid Silva from Brazil. He pocketed a valuable US$10, 000 for his win and thanked his friends back home, sponsors and Volcom for the great event.

Still Bay offered some surfing Easter eggs…

So, got to do a roadtrip to the South Coast this Easter and had some pumping Still Bay on the Friday. I surfed twice and totalled almost 6 hours. Just love that feeling of being surfed out, falling into bed totally exhausted at night. Yes, that’s my idea of the perfect holiday…

Looks like the waves have been pumping on the West Coast this whole week, I’m stuck in the office most of the time, but I’m amped to get out over the weekend. What I’m even more amped about is to be training for SA Longboarding Champs, albeit on a shortboard, as I’m still awaiting my new longboard from Dutchie. If you’re in the market for a new board, talk to the man, he’s been at it for years…

Seli 1 – a R40m artificial reef?

Table Mountain with the remains of the Seli 1 wreck

While I’m sitting here writing this I’m hearing how they’re blasting the remains of the Seli 1 shipwreck on Dolphin Beach. From what I’ve read you won’t see much on top of the water when they’re done with the R40 million operation to remove what’s left. Apparently there will be some remains below water…

Now if you’ve got a frothing grom inside like me, you’ll also have visions of a grand artificial reef with peeling a-frames, much like the original wreck created in it’s wake so time will tell. I think some banks will hopefully form around those parts. Not sure how dangerous it’ll be but danger is a Saffa surfer’s middle name, right? Easier than fending off bergies and car guards or making that 20ft Sunsets drop…

And winter swells are coming! Let me know your thoughts.

One of my favourite events of the year was recently held at the beautiful Llandudno beach in Cape Town. The Rolling Retro Surf Festival. Beach goers came out in droves and packed the beach for an awesome day of surfing and sun bathing. The weather gods once again didn’t disappoint and with a South Easter predicted I was bracing for a blow in the afternoon, but not a whisper came up the entire day. Photos after the jump…

Fantasy surfer picks for Snapper Rocks 2013

So here are my fantasy surfer picks for Snapper Rocks. It’s the first time I’m taking part, so be kind 🙂

Fantasy Surfer Picks for Snapper Rocks 2013

Had to back our boy Jordy. He’s always performed reasonably well at Snapper, so let’s hope it pays off. Parko (left out) is my only worry as he just won a comp, but else I couldn’t get my team full, so here goes. I think Taj is going to give it his all this year, so wanted to leave him in.

The perfect wave

It’s something we all strive for, to find that perfect wave in the middle of nowhere with only you and your mates surfing it.

It can’t get much better than this…

Exploring Panaitan

Kudos to South African Jared Houston (one of our better bodyboarding exports) for being one of the guys in this movie. Great flick Nic Barclay!

Meanwhile in Portugal

Cape Town’s waves have been fickle over the past week or so. My longboard is in for repairs (more on that later) so I couldn’t even hang ten a bit. While we absolutely can’t complain about the weather in Cape Town at the moment perhaps I’ve been spoiled over the holidays in terms of surf, but I’m really amped to get out there again and shred a few.

Other stuff happening is this tool that made a total fool of himself for his surf rage. Go and check it out and add your 2c to the post. It’s disgusting in my opinion and I’ve personally witnessed his behaviour at Supers.

Meanwhile, this is what’s happening in Portugal:

Surfing Distant Shores

It’s often a surf mission that gets the stoke going for a surfer. You can travel to the ends of the earth (as depicted in this video), or you can do a local day-trip. Either way, the stoke will find you…
